The short version
- ChatGPT is something you visit. You ask, it answers, you close the tab.
- A Bench agent lives on a Mac in your office and keeps working after you go home.
- The harness is the setup on that Mac so the agent can reach your files and tools.
- Your people keep working in the browser. Nobody else needs a new computer.
You already use AI
Most contractors we talk to already use AI. Somebody in the office rewrites emails in ChatGPT. An estimator cleans up field notes in Gemini. One or two have a tool that prices a roof from a photo. None of that is wasted. It works and it saves time, right up until you close the tab. Then it's gone. The chat window doesn't know your stages, doesn't know who owns the file, and has no idea the claim on Oak Street hasn't moved in three days.
That's the whole difference. You visit a chatbot. An agent stays.
What an agent does all day
An agent is a program that lives on a Mac in your office and keeps working when nobody's looking at it. You teach it how your company does a job, the same way you'd train a new office hire, and it holds onto that. When a file needs to move, it moves it. When a follow-up is due, it drafts the email. When a step needs a real decision from a real person, it stops and waits for you, then picks back up where it left off.
Where it lives
The Bench app runs in your browser like any other software you own. That's where your people log in, look at the board, approve work, and take a payment. The agents don't live in the browser. They run on one Mac that stays on in your office, and the setup on that Mac is what we call the harness. If that Mac goes to sleep, the agents sleep with it. So the first box is a Mac mini, an iMac, or a Mac Studio on ethernet that never gets closed. Your install crew doesn't need one. Their phones are enough to see the job.
Keep ChatGPT
Keep using ChatGPT for the quick stuff. It's good at it. The work that has to finish without you sitting there watching is the part that belongs on an agent.
What to do next
Read how the app and the Mac split the work, then look at the Mac page once and buy the box that fits how you run. Don't make a laptop the always-on machine. Laptops sleep.
Questions
Is ChatGPT an agent?
No. ChatGPT is a chat window you visit. It answers and forgets. An agent lives on your Mac, holds the rules you taught it, and keeps working when you close the window.
What is a harness?
The setup on a Mac you own that lets agents run the work. You buy the Mac. We set up the harness. Your people still work in the browser.
Do I stop using ChatGPT?
No. Keep it for the quick stuff. The work that has to finish without you sitting there is what belongs on an agent.
Where do my people work?
In the browser, on their phones, on the iPad they already have. The always-on Mac is for the agents, not a new computer for every person.
